World Cup 2018 – Preview

11 June 2018 Entertainment Sports

With the biggest sporting event of the summer already under way, this is a preview of what players look to catch the eye in this summer World Cup in Russia. Although our beloved Greece and Cyprus teams will not be present, there are also a number of top quality teams which have missed out in this summer tournament like Italy, Holland and Chile but this is what makes the World Cup the most exciting and unexpected sporting tournament.

With the opening game that to place on Thursday 14th of June where hosts Russia thrashed Saudi Arabia 5-0 in the Group A fist round of games, this is the biggest scoreline since the 1930s for a host nation win. Here’s a deeper look at the teams in each group.
GROUP A: Russia – Saudi Arabia – Egypt – Uruguay

In Group A, one of the players to look out for is Mohmand Salah who single handily helped Egypt to qualify for Russia 2018 scoring 32 goals in 56 international appearances. Another player to look out for, who likes to make a name for himself in the World Cup, is Barcelona’s Uruguayan striker, Luis Suarez.

GROUP B: Spain – Portugal – Iran – Morocco

Group B teams are packed with a lot of star-studded players, including Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, who is going to captain his country and hopes to win them their first World Cup. Also, within Group B are Spain the 2010 winners, their star player looks to be Real Madrid attacking midfielder Isco.

GROUP C: France – Demark – Peru – Australia.

Group C features France with a squad full of many amazing and talented players. Two players to particularly look out for would be Manchester United’s Paul Pogba and Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann. Going into the tournament and looking at the plethora of talent available to Didier Deschamps, France look to be favourites to win the tournament.

GROUP D: Argentina – Iceland – Croatia – Nigeria

Group D holds Argentina and one of the top two players in the world, Lionel Messi, who singled handily helped Argentina to qualify for Russia 2018 by scoring a hat-trick against Ecuador to seal qualification to the tournament.

GROUP E: Brazil – Switzerland – Costa Rica – Serbia

Group E contains none other than Brazil whose teams always look to shine in World Cups. A player that encompasses this is PSG’s Neymar. the £200m signing will be one of the players to look out for at this summer World Cup.

GROUP F: Germany – Mexico – Sweden – South Korea

Group F holds the defending and four-time World Cup winners Germany. Their squad is full of highly experienced players who have played in the world cup before, but one of their most experienced players is goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who looks to play a big role on Germany trying to win back to back World Cups for the first time since Brazil did it in 1962.

GROUP G: Belgium – England – Tunisia – Panama

Group G pitches two great footballing sides, Belgium and England, against each other. Chelsea’s skilful winger Eden Hazard looks to captain Belgium in next summer tournament and is one to look out for. England’s danger man is striker Harry Kane who can’t stop scoring for club and country.

GROUP H: Poland – Senegal – Japan – Colombia

Lastly Group H is headed up by Poland who are captained by goal machine Robert Lewandowski, he scored 16 goals in nine qualifying matches for Poland and is their all-time record goal-scorer. The skipper has scored a total of 51 international goals in 91 games.

There are many difficult groups in Russia 2018, but the group which I feel is the group of death is Group D. Which holds Argentina, Iceland, Croatia, Nigeria. Argentina look to go step further then 2014 where they fell short in the final to a late extra time goal to Germany’s Mario Gozte. Lionel Messi looks to captain Argentina in summer tournament and they look to be one of the favourites for the trophy. Also, within this group are Iceland who performed an unbelievable shock upset in Euro 2016 knocking out England, they will look to their star player Gyfi Sigurosson to try and create some magic and try to perform another upset in a tough group. Not forgetting Croatia who have a great side including Lukca Modric, and Rakitic who look to dominate the midfield. And, finally Nigeria who have a squad full for young talented players who look to be the surprise package of the group.

There are many players who look to dazzle the eyes of millions of fans worldwide in Russia 2018, there are 3 players which I have picked out who I feel are going to be the star players of the tournament. The first is Brazil’s Neymar, who has scored 55 goals in 85 appearances, who has just come back from injury and looks to be in great form in perfect time going into the World Cup. The second player to look out for is none other then Argentina’s Lionel Messi, who looks to help and drive Argentina to the World Cup in Russia, after previously falling short in the last World Cup  in extra time to Germany. Lionel Messi has been in amazing form all season for Barcelona helping them to win the domestic double. Messi looks to be one of the stand out players in this World Cup and is one to watch for all the fans watching worldwide. Lastly, the final player that looks to be one of the players of the tournament is Portugal’ s Cristiano Ronaldo, who has been on amazing form this season for Real Madrid scoring 44 goals in all completions and has helped Real Madrid win their 13th Champions League, he also single handedly helped Portugal win the Euro 2016, and looks to go step further and win the World Cup this summer.
